Natsai Audrey Chieza

Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Faber Futures

Natsai Audrey Chieza is a Zimbabwean-born London-based designer, entrepreneur, and storyteller whose practice is deeply committed to nurturing co-designed, equitable, and biodiverse futures. Natsai studied architectural design at the University of Edinburgh followed by an MA in Material Futures from Central Saint Martins. Over a decade of experimentation, she established novel design-driven processes and conceptual frameworks for bacteria textile colouration, placing her at the vanguard of the emerging field of Biodesign. In 2018, Natsai founded Faber Futures, an award-winning agency that operates at the intersection of nature, design, technology and society. Through transdisciplinary collaboration, Faber Futures engages industry, institutions and multi-sector brands with alternative models for holistic innovation. From steering organisational culture by embedding a creative residency at the heart of a biotechnology start-up, to servicing R&D, strategy and insight needs for purpose-driven sustainability-oriented brands, Natsai’s approach to design is motivated by what she sees as an imperative to widen both participation and the lens through which we integrate design, the natural world and technology. Natsai has exhibited internationally, including at Ars Electronica, Design Museum, Pompidou Centre, Vitra Design Museum and the Science Gallery Dublin. A TED speaker, Natsai has given talks on transdisciplinary, including at Design Indaba, SxSW, BoF, and Dezeen Day, and has taught on biodesign programmes at Central Saint Martins in London. She was awarded the INDEX award in 2019 and is named on ICON Design 100 2019, Evening Standard Progress 1000 2019, It’s Nice That Ones to Watch 2019, and OkayAfrica’s 100 Women 2018.
