E. Richard Gold

James McGill Professor, Faculty of Law; Founding Director, Centre for Intellectual Property Policy, McGill University

Dr. Gold is Associate Dean (Graduate Studies) and a James McGill Professor at McGill’s Faculty of Law and Department of Human Genetics in the Faculty of Medicine. He is an internationally recognized expert on innovation policy backed up by research and teaching on patents and patent law at both domestic and international levels. He has advised the World Health Organization, the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, UNITAID as well as local governments. All of his funding comes from peer reviewed grants in Canada, the US and Europe or independent foundations. His work has never been funded, directly or indirectly, by industry. He is broadly published in law, international relations, management, ethics, science policy and policy journals, is frequently interviewed and is active in translating research into policy. He has participated in patent law cases, on a pro bono basis, in which courts grapple with cutting-edge patent issues.
